Estonia (12/02/2017 - 12/05/2017)

Estonia marked the beginning of a road trip through the Baltics, as this was the very best way to view not just the cities but also the sights and nature along the way.

Our journey began on a boat - the notorious Helsinki to Finland ferry, which until recently was the perfect excuse for Finns to get utterly wasted due to their ability to escape high alcohol taxes on the mainland. Some spend the entire day on the boat, just going back and forth. I will spare you further details.

Tallinn itself was a hidden gem - a tiny walled medieval city in the middle, with lovely narrow stone roads, great restaurants and a very potent Christmas market.  This quaintness betrays the fact that Tallinn is also the capital of one of the most digital nations on the planet. It is the first country to move voting entirely electronic, signing entirely digital, and the first in the world to have the concept of e-Residency.

We then went from Tallinn to Tartu, passing through relics of Soviet days (e.g. the Tallinn TV tower), as well as wonderful outdoor hikes through bogs.  Tartu itself was a small university town, but it held quite possibly the most technologically advanced museum I've ever visited, The Estonian National Museum. Also there was a cute upside-down house across the street.

Highly recommend visiting!
