Preface: at the time of this post, Ukraine is fighting an existential war against its neighbour, Russia, and my heart goes out to the victims of this savagery that has no place in the 21st century, or at any time. It is painful to see the images of places I visited with awe and wonder now associated with so much pain and fear.
I've been wanting to visit Kyiv for some time, mostly due to my continuing curiosity about the ex-Soviet republics, innovation culture (squeezing in some business meetings), and my own personal heritage, in addition to visiting some old friends. Cuisine and language-wise, it felt kind of like a mix between Russia and Poland, and I enjoyed strolling around the hilly streets, visiting some old churches and trying more 'authentic' versions of dishes I grew up with.
It was a nice warmup to the real reason I came to Ukraine - which will detail in the next post! In the meanwhile, here are some photos below.
