Despite living in North America for over 25 years I still never made it down to Miami - only Orlando for weddings or conferences, and ironic that it took me moving overseas before actually visiting (ironically, for another conference).
Miami is a melting pot of American, Caribbean, and Latin America cultures, and it makes for wonderfully diverse city filled with rich cuisine, colourful characters, and beautiful people (although the ultra-high rates of cosmetic surgery here, for both genders, may contribute to this). It was my first time trying Haitian food, which in itself is a fusion of French and African cuisines, and thanks to the large Cuban exile community, the first place I've ever had decent Cuban food.
The great climate (aside from hurricane season) also makes it a popular place for retirees, most notably the Canadian snowbirds, which I think number a few hundred thousand. Combine this with low taxes, and it's no surprise that a number of very wealthy individuals have also decided to call Miami home - was surprised by the sheer number of yachts and mansions.
Just outside of Miami are the Everglades - a vast plain of wetlands, filled with grasses, mangrove trees, and.. crocodiles. It was great fun airboating through.
