China (09/09/2018 - 09/15/2018)

This was a brief trip to China to reconnect with some old colleagues and business partners that encountered a slight pickle, namely a super-typhoon in Hong Kong.

While the original plan was to hit a few commercial centres, Beijing, Shanghai, Hangzhou, Shenzhen and Hong Kong, due to the typhoon, we had to stop in Hangzhou. We figured, since we were here, might as well go visit a new city - Shaoxing, the "birthplace" of yellow wine.

Before showing some of the photos of Shaoxing, some interesting random highlights of the prior cities.

Newfoundland, Canada (07/14/2018 - 07/20/2018)

Growing up in Ontario, Newfoundland served as the butt of all jokes. They were our 'simpler' countrymen with funny accents and strange habits. I feel embarrassed for having kept that misconception in my mind alive for as long as I did.

Yes, they do have a 'funny' accent, yes, they do have some interesting local customs, and yes fisheries were by far one of the most important industries and much revolved around that - but they are some of the most genuinely nice people you will ever *ever* encounter in your life (just look up Gander and 9/11), and they've certainly punched above their weight in Canadian literature, art, and science.

Moreover, little do many Canadians realise that Newfoundland is one of our richest provinces as well thanks to the offshore oil boom and the past need to diversify away from threatened fisheries.

It is also one of the most beautiful places I've ever been in my life, and I hope some of the photos hint towards this.

Our trip began in the capital, St. John's and we first went south to take a boat tour of the numerous uninhabited islands where millions of birds nest (including the iconic puffins), before heading north to Trinity (and the unforgettable Skerwink Trail), Twilingate, then back again to St. John's through Gander.

I won't say much more and let the photos speak for themselves.

Northwestern Germany (06/17/2018 - 06/21/2018)

I came to this part of Germany to meet a friend and business acquaintance for fate to strike thrice fortuitously in close proximity to one another due to conferences and travel plans.

It was just a quick trip to Heidelberg, Frankfurt, Cologne, and Münster (but not so quick as to avoid having someone damage my rental car!)

Nice architecture, green cities, and good hearty German food and beer. Quite relaxing despite all the driving between cities (albeit the autobahn is wunderbar!)
